Hairy-Chested History

ISBN: 0646429868 (Hardcover)

Author: Stapleton, Ian

Hairy-Chested History is the first in a series of four books exploring the fascinating lives of many of the colourful characters who have called the Victorian High Country "home" over the past 150 years.

Their stories are told mostly through the memories, recollections and writings of the older mountain people who knew of the various characters in one way or another, using material collected and interviews recorded for nearly 30 years. Three more books will hopefully follow to complete this set, the first focusing on the colourful characters of the Dargo High Plains, the second on those of the Bogong High Plains, the third drawing on characters from all over the rest of the high country.

Snowbound in the winter and dangerous at any time, the steep, wild country that lies between Harrietville and Mt Hotham is some of the toughest and most demanding in Australia. The daily lives of the remarkable people who pioneered this spectacular area were so remote and hard, and so lacking in any real material posessions or comforts, that many of their stories are almost unbelievable today. But the characters in this book are real ones, and their stories are recounted here as accurately and completely as possible.

Be they shanty keepers like Mother Morrell, road builders like Henry Morgan, coach drivers like Mick Dougherty, gold miners like Bill de Luet, horse packers like Eric Johnson, publicans like Barney Rush, cattlemen like Vic Attridge, or hermits like Bill Spargo, they each have a wonderful story behind them. This book is an attempt to record what is left of those stories before they are lost forever.
