When the first motorcycle arrived in Bruthen in 1914, it caused a sensation, men, women and children came from everywhere to see this amazing machine and its entripid rider, but the local horses were not impressed ~ they bolted ~ and for good reason too. Who would want to stay around to look at a potential executioner?
The new motor age and, the demise of the horse as man's prime means of transport, were linked together, for as the motor car cam into prominence, the horse, albiet slowly, faded into obscurity, never again to proudly draw an elegant carriage or lean into the harness of a heavy wagon, except for the few who are now brought out on nostalgic occasions.
With the coming of the automobile a whole new era dawned. New roads were to be built and new territories opened up. Manufacturers of motor cars literally sprang up like mushrooms, and a whole new industry was created for the care and repair of the new monster. The whole world succumbed to the lure of fast, effortless and comparatively cheap travel and East Gippsland was not left out.
